What’s Trending for 2019 & How to Make Money Off of Them

Some tried and true fashions, some reclaimed, and some new energetic ideas. Lots of fun trends in store for us this year! Many of these trends leaning towards a simpler life and less traveled paths. The world seems to be ready to start focusing on slowing down and enjoying life a little bit more. Our hustle and bustle ways seem to be catching up to many of us. Self care is even taking on a simpler approach for 2019. We’re also getting artsy and expressive with sketchbooks and body-painting trending!

Some of the Top Trends we’re seeing all over the place for 2019:

  • Purple hair – Lilac is making a huge hit this year, but even that is coming in all kinds of shades. My favorite being the newly emerging Chocolate Lilac.
  • Baking bread – This classic kitchen skill is making a big comeback this year.
  • Statement Sneakers – Sporty, yet chic. Sneakers are in!
  • Mustard yellow and cactus arrangements in the home – Colors are made to pop in homes in 2019.
  • Roads less traveled – Surprise destinations, small towns, abandoned castles.
  • Wellness is taking a simpler approach this year. It’s all about taking back your time rather than filling up your schedule. This includes less healthy habit packed planners, better sleep schedules, and one stop wellness centers.
  • For parents we are seeing Toy Share Subscriptions popping up.
  • Elderberries will be making a debut this year.
  • Side Hustles from home are sticking around.
  • Financial Health is also taking a forefront this year.
  • See the full lists here.

How To Stay Positive & Full of Passion as a Blogger

Blogging takes a lot of work, a lot of energy, time, creativity, and focus. At times it can be quite draining. There are frustrating moments like when your WordPress plug ins won’t work or when you aren’t getting the traffic you need on a post. In the 12 plus years I’ve been blogging I have definitely experienced my share of ups and downs. Days when I feel on top of the world and days when I am practicing as much self control as I can muster to not through my computer across the room. But in the end it’s all been worth it. I have grown so much not only in my blogs and businesses but also personally.

A big key to my success is in keeping my head up, staying positive and surrounding myself with inspiration.

Five Things Bloggers Do To Stay Positive and Full of Passion

  1. The more inspirational the read, the better. Motivational quotes, other blogger’s stories, self-development articles and books.
  2. We write with intention. We write with the intent to share our stories to inspire others.
  3. By allowing our readers to hold us accountable.
  4. We build our tribes. Partnering up and collaborating with other bloggers, joining mastermind groups, and growing our group of business-minded buddies.
  5. We are fueled by the excitement of meeting our goals.

What ways to do you stay inspired? I’d love to hear about them!

How to Stay Positive When Your Business Hits Obstacles

There may come a time when you feel like your new business wasn’t meant to be. It might happen just out of the gate or it might take time. It can make you wonder why you ever started this in the first place.

Don’t quit!

First off, you’re not alone. Everyone has hit this roadblock at some point.

Every entrepreneur has felt the worries and wonders if they made a mistake. They have felt the sting of rejection, failure, and falling flat. They know how it feels to be overwhelmed, in over your head, and just plain tired. Don’t give up!

“When you are going through hell, keep going.” -Winston Churchill.

In the rarest of cases, a new business is a bust. In most cases, roadblocks are merely mindset issues. There is no roadblock that can’t be overcome one way or another.

Look as roadblocks as opportunities to learn.

Address the feelings and thoughts your having and then dig deeper to find the solution to overcome them.

Things like:

  • Fear of failure
  • Second-guessing your ideas
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Loss of stamina
  • Over or under eating
  • Sleeping too much or too little

These issues aren’t typically the roadblock themselves, they compound it and distracts you from simply fixing the problem. The key to fixing any problem starts with your mindset. Making the decision to persevere, find the solution, and manage your thoughts is the key to battling the roadblocks that you hit with your business.

When you feel the urge to quit or move towards despair, consider these options instead:

  1. Find a mentor or a Business Coach – A mentor is someone who has skill sets that are more advanced than yours. Someone who has been there and done what you are trying to do. They have likely weathered the storms and know that all ships rise with the tide. Having a mentor can help you keep your focus and work out the roadblocks instead of falling into unnecessary depression.
  2. Crowd-source and Collaborate – Solving a problem can be as easy as crowd-sourcing. The better your community relations, the easier it is to find someone somewhere who has the expertise to fix whatever is broken. Spend your time pouring into others and they will be there when you need them, too. Collaborating with help you brainstorm solutions as well as help take some of the workload off of you.

A new business, and even a seasoned business, is going to hit roadblocks. It’s totally normal. Your best and first line of defense is to adjust your mindset. Having a can-do, positive mindset is the sharpest tool in your box and will be the launching pad for the solutions you need to overcome anything.

Know When To Go Full Time With These Three Big Signs

Most of the time, a side hustle is born out of the desire to be your own boss, control your own destiny, and fill a need in the marketplace. And usually in that order. There is nothing wrong with wanting to carve out your own niche. Being an entrepreneur grants you that glory.

Launching and creating your new business can give you great satisfaction as you start seeing consistent results. Most likely you have conquered some big mindset issues and restructured your life to accommodate the challenges and needs of your business. And with conquering your challenges you are also growing along with your business. It’s a big deal, celebrate it!

With all that success, you might be wondering if and when you should take your side hustle to the next level.

First, you must determine what the next level might be. It might mean reducing your other work commitments by half or eliminating them all together. It could look like selling your business and starting something new. Or could be anything in between.

The three signs that may mean it’s time to take your side hustle full time:

You are bringing in enough income to cover your current income.

If you are starting to be able to replace most of your current income with what you are making from your side hustle this is a good sign.

This can be achieved in more than one way:

  • Replacement of direct income. Either replacing you or your spouse’s income can be considered a trigger to take your hustle to the next level.
  • Reduction of expenses. Sometimes the income generated from your side hustle minus expenses can cause a reduce in your budgeted expenses. In turn, this equals a savings. Consider what expenses you have that can be eliminated and it may mean you have the green light to take your side hustle to another level.

You are turning away customers or orders due to time constraints.

If you are turning away customers and orders because you don’t have enough time in the day, it might be an indicator you are ready to go to the next level. If it makes sense to decrease your other commitments because you are passing up lucrative opportunities, that’s a big clue your side hustle is on fire.

When you feel it in your bones.

Sometimes the biggest sign is a nagging intuition. Knowing when to take the leap to the next level is often a gut feeling. You know your mindset, your market, your expenses, and your family’s needs better than anyone else. Outside of a limiting mindset, you know deep in your bones when the time is right.

There comes a point with successful side hustles when things need to expand and grow for them to keep moving and to keep growing.

Taking the risk to move from the security of your main income source to the exciting and nerve-wracking world of full-time entrepreneurship isn’t for the faint of heart. Don’t rush into it. Take the time to think of all your possibilities and map them out and prepare for the jump.

Why Business Planning is Imperative for You to be Successful

Do you set aside time regularly to plan what you want to do in your business?

If it’s not something you currently do, I strongly encourage you to embrace it for the remainder of this year as well as the one coming up. Setting aside time at the end of the year, to plan out what I want to do and more importantly what growth I want to achieve in the coming year has been crucial to my own success. #SuperPlanner over here, I live by the saying, “If you don’t have a flight plan, you’ll never go anywhere”.

Business planning is “the secret” to success for many reasons.

The first is efficiency.

When you go in with a clear plan, you can focus on what’s most important. Instead of spending time trying to figure out what you should be working on, what pieces of the puzzle are missing still, or what you need to do to break through to the next income level, you know exactly what needs to come next with a step by step plan.

Set a clear goal in mind and a plan for the year, you can then walk backwards to create effective and efficient daily to-do lists, steps and timelines. Work on what needs to get done each day and you will reach your goals.

Setting a big goal for yourself also helps you think outside the box.

Decide on a big income goal for the coming month. Write it down. Keep it in front of you. Then get to work and start to notice what happens next. You start to think of things that didn’t occur to you before. It gives you the opportunity to come up with creative ways to get more traffic. Decide to run a fun promo that adds dollars to your bank account. The same happens when an important deadline comes up unexpectedly. You will come up with a way to reach that deadline because your success depends on it.

There is another dimension to all this and that’s what’s going on in our subconscious mind.

While we are busy plowing through our to-do list, cooking dinner for the family, and even sleeping, our subconscious mind is working towards those goals as well.

In short, planning and setting goals is important because it helps you grow faster.

That means you end up with more success and reach your goals sooner while spending less time slaving away at your desk.

How to Set Healthy Boundaries as a Blogger

I had a lot to learn about healthy boundaries when I started hardcore blogging. It was the year I decided to go full time and turn my blogging passion into a business. There were many late nights, even sometimes a few days I skipped sleep all together. My mind was constantly (and still does sometimes) buzzing with ideas and thoughts.

I titled it ‘Racing Mind Syndrome’.

I don’t really know if this is a real thing but it felt fitting to me. My mind was on overdrive 100% of the time. I managed to keep this going for a few years. How I did this? Honestly, it surely was an illusion. In reflection, I see dips and highs in the consistency of my blogging.

Why?

Because I wasn’t managing my racing mind and thoughts and I was burning out. Boundaries were not being set and withheld. It resulted in small waves of burn out. Those were the dips in my writing. Those dips caused the declines in my traffic.

Without boundaries two things can happen: One, you’re work won’t be quality work because you will not be able to dedicate adequate time to the projects even if you do meet your deadlines. Or second, you do manage to get it all done but you don’t sleep, eat, rest or anything in between. As a result, you burn out and become pretty much worthless…only saying this one because I’ve been there.

Boundaries provide benefits to you personally and in the success of your business.

  1. Boundaries set standards.
  2. They encourage good self-care.
  3. Having boundaries will increase your energy and productivity.
  4. You will produce higher quality work.
  5. Boundaries create an organized environment.
  6. Having boundaries (and sticking to them) will boost your self-confidence.
  7. They also result in more respect for you as individual.
  8. As contradictory as it may sound initially, boundaries give you more freedom.

Here’s six ways you should be practicing boundaries as a blogger:

  1. Say no. This is really important to learn to do. And I know it is super hard sometimes, especially when there are so many awesome opportunities out there. But it is a dire practice. There is only so much that can be accomplished in a day’s time. There is only so much that our brains can process at one time.
  2. Create a schedule. This will help you build better harmony among your tasks. It helps you get a better look at work-life balance too. Check out my post ‘How to Build a Schedule for a Healthy Hustle‘ for some ideas. Having a schedule will also help you identify when you need to say no to additional work and projects.
  3. Take time to re-charge. Make sure you are giving yourself breathing room. You need to have time to rest each week, or even each day. Step away from the laptop. Put down the pen and notebook. Silence your phone. Separate from your business for at least a few hours a day.
  4. Practice self-care. Get restful sleep. Eat healthy. Drink water. Exercise. Meditate. Journal. You have to take care of yourself. Making time for your wellness is part of having healthy boundaries.
  5. Allow yourself flexibility. Life is going to happen. If you restrict yourself so much that you can’t flow with life then you will go nuts. There are some nights that I get into such a writing frenzy that I end pulling that all nighter. So I allow myself that flexibility and I give myself some extra down time the next day. Let yourself slide sometimes. My boundary in that is in setting the plan to move things around.
  6. Practice forgiveness for yourself. In addition to allowing flexibility, you have to forgive yourself. Forgiveness gives you freedom. It shakes off those thoughts that can get you stuck in a rut or weigh you down.

In building these boundaries you give yourself an environment that you can breathe in. One that is more manageable and not as overwhelming. It gives you the freedom to encompass the work-life balance that is so important.

5 Smart Tips to Get People to Want to Read Your Emails

If you want people to read your emails the first thing you need to get down is the subject line. If you can’t get your subscribers to open your emails, it really doesn’t matter how good the actual email is.

Many of us fall in the habit of writing a killer email but then we just slap a quick subject line on it and think that’s going to do the trick. Well it’s not. The first thing your subscribers see is the subject line. They’re busy folks. So you’re going to have to give them a compelling reason to take the time to open your email and read it.

Keep It Short

You want your readers to see the entire subject line before they click it. You also want to make it easy for people to scan through their emails. Try to get your point across in 50 characters or less. Pay attention to how your subject lines look on your own devices.

Avoid “Spammy” Words

Stay away from using any words we typically associate with spam emails. Words like “sale”, “discount”, “coupon”, “free”, “limited time offer” and even “reminder” are over used. Even if they don’t trigger a spam filter and actually make it to your reader’s inbox, chances are pretty high they’ll get ignored.

Personalize It

While personalizing emails with someone’s first name has been overused in some markets, it still works well for many of us. Give it try and see if it works for you. Don’t overdo it, but use it when you really need them to open the email.

See if you have the capability to personalize other ways too. Depending on what data you collect when your readers sign up, you may be able to personalize other things like their location for example. Seeing the name of your state or even city in an email subject line is sure to get your attention.

Appeal To Their Curiosity

We are all nosy and it’s hard to ignore subject lines that sound intriguing or only tell part of the story. Using “…” at the end of your subject line will also work.

The idea here is simple. You want them to click and open the email to find out what the heck you’re talking about or how the story ends.

Keep a file or a notebook to write down what email subject lines catch your eye and get you to open them. This inspiration is a great way to learn what works and what doesn’t.

How Regret has Taught Me More about Self-Care as a Business Owner

Regret can be either a demise or an opportunity to learn great lessons. This morning I posted my first day co-hosting #LoveBlog on www.dofivethingsaday.com with the topic being ‘Regret’. When I participate in this challenge every year it always gives me more insight into who I am. The prompts lead me into a deeper self-discovery each year. With recently launching this blog, my mind went into thoughts of how regret has formed in the processes of building my blogs and my businesses.

Yesterday I shared my post on How to Build a Schedule for a Healthy Hustle and I touched on how I had experienced true burn out at the end of last year. This is where regret taught me many lessons. It wasn’t necessarily a direct path from regret that led to my burn out. But I did catch myself overworking to try compensate for regret that had stacked up inside of me.

The time I took recovering from my burn out gave me a chance to see things from a different perspective. It gave me a chance to separate my regret, guilt, and what I thought as short-comings from my actions. In essence, I was separating my emotions from my actions so I could define them clearly. I needed to identify my motivators and my drivers.

I want more out of life than I have now.

I regretted not completing college. I regretted not pushing myself to go after my dreams earlier in life. Because of that I am left with lots of passions unfulfilled. That leaves a certain amount of inner chaos inside of me. I was harboring a sense of unsatisfaction. In response to those feelings I set out to accomplish a crazy amount of goals in an unrealistic time span.

You can’t change the past.

No matter how much work I do now, I cannot change the past. I can however move forward. But I couldn’t truly do that until I learned how to practice gratitude. I have accomplished many things in my life. I have many great stories to tell. But I was so blinded by the regret I was holding on to that I was missing my opportunities of celebration.

To be your best, you have to take the best care of yourself.

Since I’ve been practicing gratitude, I’ve been able to see regret as a tool and less as a nemesis. I use it as a motivator, and as a teacher.

What Lessons I Learned about Self-care from Regret:

  1. Practice gratitude – Be grateful for all that you have accomplished so far and all the wonderful things you have in your life. Write down what your grateful daily. Constantly remind yourself of your blessings.
  2. Take time to rest – You have to give yourself the opportunity to recharge. You will be so much more productive and have sharper thoughts when you do.
  3. Celebrate – Reward yourself for your accomplishments. Growing your sense of pride in your work will strengthen your confidence. This is a motivator to keep moving forward.
  4. Take your time – Don’t rush your projects. Let them grow. Give yourself the space to thoroughly develop them and enjoy the process along the way.
  5. Don’t isolate – Regret can cause us to want to withdraw. Don’t. If you are feeling overwhelmed with regret, reach out to a loved one. Talk it out.
